Alt image description - Default from media library
Dusin Dauncey
I think this was implemented in a 2.x release. But since the Breakdance team doesn’t seem to be using Canny any more, this just hasn’t been updated.

I cannot believe this was not implemented in BD V1.0 as it is such a basic and important thing. And now it is not fixed after 1,5 years opening this thread.

I had no idea this was a thing. Seriously unimpressed. I add alt tags last after the build is approved. I don’t want to have to go through and re-add every image on a website.
This needs to be fixed. Or at least added as an option to turn on/off if it’s “performance issues”.

Not sure if this is relevant, as in whether I have understood the question, but we use Rankmath to auto add alt tags to images and Premio Folders Pro to change image filenames within the media library.
Which is why I posted asking for a feature that mirrors what Premio folders can do :-)
Forgive me if I've missed the meaning of the question :-)

Recently found out that Rankmath no longer adds the alt tags because of the way BD works.

At least the behavior should be when clicking the SAVE button - Breakdance should go through all of the images on the page and take the latest alt tags from Media Library. If the alt tag has been set in the image field inside BD then take that alt tag, if not, take it from Media Library. It's easier to re-click save on 15-20 pages then it is to go through each page and individually add each image. Script in the Tools section is a good idea also.

This is under consideration but could have significant performance impacts. It sounds like a good idea but it is far less trivial than it seems.

Louis Reingold: I like the idea of this but I understand the performance considerations. I'm more for performance and tagging alts when adding the photos in the first place, though I understand the need to backtrack. Maybe this can be a feature on the tools page similar to regenerating css cache. So there is no performance hit on the builder but a feature available if needed to process a full site retroactively.

Louis Reingold: Maybe this could be triggered manually from the Breakdance > settings > tools.
When changes to alt descriptions have been made in the WP media library, users then can manually trigger a Breakdance refresh of all image elements pulling the data from the media library.

Louis Reingold: Any news?

Additionay, by default, when adding image alt desc is not used, you have to manually enable and then write the alt. Better to have the alt tag automatically read the default alt that has been set during media upload in media library.

Mirza Hodžić: I just revisited this today. It does use the alt tag from the media upload. When adding an image if the alt txt is in the media library is automatically applied. While BD gives you the ability to disable or override if needed this is less scalable long-term and i dont see myself using that feature. Lets say you bulk changed a lot of image alt properties in the media library after the images were already used on a page. You just need to go in and remove and re-add the same picture in the same module and it will then include the updated media library alt tag. I am in a situation where I am looking to update a couple hundred tags on one site spanning many pages. I think the cleanest solution is to have a script that would run through your pages and refresh existing images to sync with the new data in the library. Like I mentioned in the comment yesterday to Louis Reingold.
